The new sense – Hallucination of Yourself

MAIN IDEA: The topic is about hallucination, we explain it as a new type of sense of human being. As everyone knows all cognitions of the world is brought by five senses, like what you see, what you hear, touch or smell to identify something. So the question is can we have an identity without any senses? I believe that, although everyone has different thinking of the same object, for people, the five senses give each thing own identity. And the new sense, hallucination, will help people have identity in subjective world as well. Human’s sensory organs receive visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile clues pulled from the outside world in a process called sensation. That raw data is then sent to the brain where it's processed, giving it meaning, putting it into context in the process of perception. So, basically the brain turns sensory input into meaningful information to create your own model understanding of the world. All of the world we can feel come from our brain. For example, when you talk with a boy in your hallucination, he has a perfect identity in your mind world, and you trust that he is a real person without any doubt, so whatever he is, the identity of this boy is true, though other people cannot see him at all.《Man In Black II》raise an idea that human existence is a huge hallucination. Do people see what is real, and what people cannot see is not existing? What if the world is a hallucination? It is a new sense which links brain and five senses. People can have novel identity through hallucination. Even if losing five senses, people can also have identity in their brain by hallucination. That is why we think hallucination is a new essential sense of human identity.

Also, we have other two ideas:

  • The new sense- translating the sense of touch into sound thorough a way to feel the touch in virtual world

way of feeling, when people involve into VR ,the sense of people may be monologed by visual and sound, there are merely using touch taste smell….so people have to use new language to feel these sense for feeling more in virtual world.

Translating touch to sound by a mode, people could be able to feel touch by sound when they are in the virtual world. (They could feel real world by this way as well, that may mix the feeling between real and virtual by this way).

When people are used to perceive touch sense by sound, it will appear a song when there are some food or dream... People will change the taste towards others, for example when may feel different sound when they meet different people with different sense of touch...

  • The new sense – to make a communication by dancing as a new language in Parallel time and space

Dream

We all have multiple identities in the world, whether in real world or visual world. So from dream perspective, we also have multiple identities in our dreams. In a dream space, it can be another real world and it can be a parallel self. The overlap between the dream world and the real world is a bridge to communicate the parallel universes. Someday in the future we may meet and talk to our dream selves and how can we consider our identity on that time?

Final form: Shoot a video: about a dance performance

Design the body language (new language)

Two screens: one is the real world; the other is the dream world. Material: use light, smog and the contrast between character and environment.

RESEARCH:

  • David Eagleman · Neuroscientist

“umwelt” in biology

Animals only pick up the environmental signals that are useful to them. The slice of the

world that creature can detect is its “umwelt”, and it assumes there’s nothing else out

there.

  • Derek Parfit

we are mistaken in assuming that personal identity is what matters in survival; what

matters is rather Relation R: psychological connectedness (namely, of memory and

character) and continuity (overlapping chains of strong connectedness).

individuals are nothing more than brains and bodies, but identity cannot be reduced to

either. (Parfit concedes that his theories rarely conflict with rival Reductionist theories in

everyday life, and that the two are only brought to blows by the introduction of

extraordinary examples, but he defends the use of such examples on the grounds that they

arouse strong intuitions in many of us.) Identity is not as determinate as we often suppose

it is, but instead such determinacy arises mainly from the way we talk. People exist in the

same way that nations or clubs exist.

  • Cyberspace

《Out of Control》The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems, and the Economic World

There are many evidence implicate that cyberspace could come true. The dream of cyberspace in people’s mind that it could be a totally free think space without racialism space and substance, which the Cyber “Declaration” is mentioned as well. So we could expected that we could develop varities of identities in the virtual space which could come true by post media.

  • Participate

Book: Armstrong, H., & Stojmirovic, Z. (2011). Participate: Designing with user-generated content. Princeton Architectural Press

Theorist and author Umberto Eco, a pioneer of reader-response theory, wrote in 1962 that all works of art are open and, thereby, participatory to some degree: “Every reception of a work of art is both an interpretation and

a performance of it, because in every reception the work takes on a fresh perspective for itself.

An open space allowing people to produce their own perspectives of identities in virtual world.

  • Oliver Sacks · Neurological anthropologist

“The brain is the most incredible thing in the universe.”

Hallucinations in what's called the inferotemporal cortex, there are only visual images, or

figments or fragments. It's only at higher levels that the other senses join in and there are

connections with memory and emotion. And in the Charles Bonnet syndrome, you don't go

to those higher levels. You're in these levels of inferior visual cortex where you have

thousands and tens of thousands and millions of images, or figments, or fragmentary

figments, all neurally encoded in particular cells or small clusters of cells.

FINAL FORM:

A video: dancer dance in a hallucination world

An interactive installation: many pieces of mirror made of different reflected

material or screens of selfie with different kinds of coding , together constitute a

circular ring (maybe); with sound pieces and maybe lighting.
